Competition Results are in…

We are so excited to announce the winner of the Leicester Women’s Poetry Competition.

This is the first time we’ve run this competition and we’re really hoping that it will become an annual celebration of local female poetry writers. The theme this year was ‘The Black Female Experience’ and as we expected, we received some very interesting and creative submissions.

There were a few aims we wished to achieve through this competition.  These are to:

1. Encourage more new female writers,
2. Encourage women to tell their stories, to share and develop their skills, and
3. Generate work from women of all ethnicities but in particular those of minority ethnic groups.

We can certainly say that both the list of authors and their submissions to the competition, we are already achieving these aims this year.

So, with no further delay, here are the results.

Winner: Chizor Onwuegbute, with the poem entitled “Who Is A Mother”

Finalist:  Audrey Young, with her poem entitled “Uncut Black Diamond”

Congratulations to both of you.

And thank you to all the other authors who join this our first poetry competition.

The presentation took place on Saturday 19th October 2019 at the African Caribbean Centre, Maidstone Road, Leicester. 

The event was well attended and both the Winner and the Finalists delighted the audience with readings of their poems.
