We’re proud to announce the publication of Sixpence a series of short stories by author Sandra Pollock.

Sixpence takes us through the experiences of a child living with an abusive parent.

An opening into some of the events from the author’s childhood that have shaped her life and her writing.  A gritty, moving and at times shocking read.

Over 51,000 children in England were identified as needing protection from abuse in 2017 (Source: Department for Education (2017). Explanation: 51,080 children were the subject of a child protection plan at 31 March 2017. ‘These memories are not beautiful, but harsh and painful.  I asked myself the question: as a writer, is there anything I can gain from them?   As I looked within to find an answer to this question, Sixpence was born. 

The memoirs are written for adults – people who like me have experienced a hard childhood but have not been able to share it.

As writers, it is our place to raise awareness of issues that impact society both positively and negatively.  To show how and where we still need to improve as human beings – the issues that cause some of us to struggle with life itself – parenthood, childhood.

To have even one child experience abuse is too much.  Facing our own demons can be the first step to freedom for many.  Through Sixpence we are allowed a peek into one child’s uncomfortable world.
